BAIGA MAGAZINE

With a growing need for a deeper intervention concerning environmental and social issues, as well as the search for a more complete, happy and fulfilling lifestyle, a new online fashion/beauty/lifestyle magazine arises: Baiga.
The sustainability of human resources and a more fair and ethical Fashion industry become real and urgent concerns.

“One action can change the World”

We aim to be a healthier “voice” and a more active and interventional lifestyle guide, with which younger generations (millennials) can identify, as well as globally showcasing the work of designers, brands, journalists and photographers with a slow fashion and slow living DNA.

 “Together, we are stronger”

We believe in inclusion and change.
We are, above all, a group of professionals specialized in different fields, such as design, journalism, fashion, photography and video, which wants to explore a “new outlook” — more analytical, conceptual and artistic — on behalf of a better and more sustainable world.
Baiga magazine was founded by Irina Alves in August 2018 after an enormous desire to transform as a human being and a professional fashion journalist.
The return to her African roots allowed her to realize that the path of solidarity, inclusion and emancipation are nothing more than social and moral obligations to a world that is facing an existential crisis of values.
As such, it became natural and necessary to establish a stand on a digital platform, where fashion, beauty and lifestyle — “without filters” — can be more sustainable, ethical and fair.

Irina Alves

Born in Luanda, Irina graduated in Social Communications, in Lisbon, and has been, from early on, connected to the world of fashion. Still in Portugal, she was the head booker for the fashion agency Global Models, responsible for the Fashion, Advertising and Events departments for 3 years. An invitation to join the Angolan magazine Chocolate as Beauty Editor and Editorial Coordinator made her return to Luanda, in 2011. Restless, perfectionist and with a great desire to improve her skills, she moved to London in 2013 to enroll in an intensive course in Fashion Journalism at the London College of Fashion. In 2016, another course — this time in Paris — caught her interest. There, she completed the course Fashion and Luxury Management: a French Know-How at the Institut Français de la Mode.
She received four consecutive acknowledgements for the work she developed at Chocolate magazine, namely: Fashion Magazine of the Year 2015 and 2016, as well as the “Women’s Fashion 2018” prize. Her journey has been documented in the book “Angola Golden Generation”.
The Kúdia Banco Alimentar Association is a cause to which she dedicates herself passionately.

Origins

The name Baiga arose from the ancestral connection Irina has with India (from her maternal grandfather’s side) at a time when the essentials and human connections have a greater importance than everything else.

The inspiration came from the central Indian tribe Baiga, that lives in a harmonious and sustainable way. It defends the Earth as sacred and practices its own cultivation called “bewar” or “dahiya”, without the “direct” intervention of man’s hand on soil.
They live in forests and most of the women are renowned for their tattoos. They are excellent tattoo artists, since for them, this art form is passed down from generation to generation. Their diet is based on fruits and vegetables that exist in the forest, as well as fish, macca and a drink made from rice water called “pej”.
Since the 1960’s, the Baiga tribe has been a victim of forced displacement by the Indian authorities claiming the preservation of tigers to the detriment of the community.
