EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT RATIFIES THE END OF DISPOSABLE PLASTIC

T he #plasticfree saga comes to an end with the new EU law (which comes into effect in 2021) which prohibits the sale of single-use plastic products throughout the European Union.

According to the release issued on 27 March, “the new rules come into effect in 2021 and were agreed by the Member States in Strasbourg with 560 votes in favor, 35 against and 28 abstentions.”

With the approval of this law, certain disposable plastic products for which alternatives are available, such as crockery, cutlery, cotton swabs, beverage shakers, balloon sticks, oxo-degradable plastic products, and expanded polystyrene food and beverage containers are prohibited.

Member States will have to ensure the selective collection of at least 90% of plastic bottles by 2029, with a binding target of at least 25% recycled plastic for bottles after 2025 and by 2030 all plastic bottles will have to meet a target of at least 30% recycled material.

Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, responsible for employment, growth, investment and competitiveness, added that: “the Parliament has played a key role in laying the foundations for this transformation and in creating an opportunity for the industry to innovate, thereby boosting our circular economy. “
