SHEA BUTTER OF GHANA BY THE BODY SHOP

One of the most sustainable beauty brands on the market, it has launched a new line of Shea Butter products (Shea Butter Body Butter) in partnership with the community of Northern Ghana.

In 1994, after visiting the community, Anita Roddick discovered the natural moisturizing properties of shea butter and the women who produced it.

Becoming fascinated by what she had found, she formalized her first request for the ingredient to the local community.

From there, it was a step to start production with the Tungteiya Women’s Association, changing the lives of countless of them, by creating a reserve fund to finance community projects.

There are already more than 600 local women who receive a fair wage in a society where the voice of men prevails.

The new Shea Body Butter is made with 192 shea nuts, which takes two days to make your butter in a long process consisting of eighteen phases.

Can be used on body, face, hair or lips, moisturizing all dry areas. Ideal to mix and make some homemade recipes, the range includes more than ten products, among them: lip moisturizing, body lotion, shampoo, conditioner and exfoliating.

Although Ghana is rich in gold, diamonds and cacao, the Tamale region (where Shea butter is produced) is dry and arid, with rainfall frequency being scarce since it occurs only once a year.

During the dry season, local families were hungry, since they could not grow their food, or sell them for their own subsistence. In this way, in establishing commercial relations of production of Shea Butter with the Body Shop, they began to earn income and become self-sufficient.

To date, the Body Shop has already promoted the creation of schools, improvement of basic sanitation (construction of pipes and opening of water wells), as well as promotion of access to health, in a total of 10 nurseries, 3 health centers, laundries for the inhabitants of the zone, as well the development of farmlands, in 11 villages of the region.
